Living Roof of Landsea

The constructed roof area took 40-50% of the entire urban space in Chinese cities, most of them have hard surface and make huge adverse impact to urban ecosystem. The green roof practice is not broad adopted in China. The only cases are still in the stage of sole-technique application, simply greening, or recreational roof garden, only a few attempts on rooftop farm. In general, the green roof in China is short of systematic integrated design thoughts, thus there still is vast headroom for its comprehensive benefits.

 

The project is located on a laboratory building, of Landsea Changxing Green Architecture Technology Research Center, adjacent to the West Lake Taihu. The total roof area of this building is 1461 m2. The building is mainly for office, complementary has sample room and workshop function. The Landsea Group has been committed to the research and practice of green building, which also provide a platform for green roof practice.

 

This project proposed the concept of living roof, intends to transform the passive grey roof to an active space, combining elements such as stormwater treatment, urban agriculture, wildlife habitat, gathering and event. The word of living means a micro-ecosystem, structured by vegetation, wildlife and human. Stormwater flow through different level of biological cleaning, and eventually reach the rain garden, water collected here will be used for: 1. Irrigating crops, the roof will become a productive vegetable garden. 2. Providing habitats, creating living space for fish, birds and other small animals. 3. Irrigating landscape plants, the recreational garden on the roof will give people a place to relax and enjoy the view. In addition, the design also taking gather and display purposes into account, turn the rooftop into a vibrant active space. This project has both demonstration value and extended significance. The design is able to effective improving urban stormwater regulation and treatment, reducing urban heat island effect, increasing building’s heat-retaining capacity as well as developing multi usages such as urban agriculture. Enhance urban space utilization efficiency.

 

Specifically, the rooftop design put its emphasis on the points of: 

1.       Ecological rain garden. Combine rainwater purification circulatory system with rain garden, not only valid in water purification and storage, the collected water will be using for irrigation, and create waterscape such as cascade, shallow water and pond, bring people close to water.

2.       Vegetable Garden. Build edible vegetable farm at the sunny side of the roof. Introduce healthy urban agriculture to the staff members, offer them a place to experience farming, harvest and enjoy organic veggies.

3.       Healing fragrant garden. To release the intensive working stress, the design came up growing various fragrant plants on the sunny rooftop to create a healing space for the employees.

Pleasant gathering space. The rooftop could provide the most immediate outdoor space for gathering and events. Well-designed elements such as vegetation, umbrellas, table and chairs will create a cozy rooftop space, which will also offset the limitation of indoor space, and enrich the spatial diversity.
